A Look Back at Women’s History Month in CCSD59
As we close out March, CCSD59 students and staff have continued age-appropriate lessons centered around influential women throughout history. We consider these figures influential because of their profound impact on our society and culture, whether it be their rise as political or social leaders, their advances in technology and medicine, or their advocation for human rights. Women’s History Month has provided our students the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the impact of these individuals as well as the difficulties they overcame.
Across our schools, students worked together to research and highlight difference makers both past and present. Displays could be found in many hallways, giving any visitors a chance to see their work and learn about prominent subjects.
Students also honored current CCSD59 staff members who play a vital role in their school experience. Teachers, coaches, administrators, office staff, and others were highlighted in these same displays for their contributions. Much of this same work was recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education this month, as 10 female staff members were included in the annual Those Who Excel Awards.
One classroom included Dr. Terri Bresnahan in their classwork as well. As the first female superintendent of CCSD59, she was honored to share her heritage and be included in elementary lessons. She is one of so many who are eager to celebrate the women who made a strong impact in their lives. We see this each day in our schools, and we are thankful our students have the opportunity to learn about these contributions.
We look forward to seeing more examples of how our schools celebrate and our students learn about how individual groups made a profound impact on our world, including this upcoming May, which is recognized as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
