School Cancelled Friday, January 9, 2015
All CCSD59 schools will be closed on Friday, January 9, 2015.
When making the decision to close school due to cold weather, the safety of our students is always our number one concern and priority. As of 8:30 PM on Thursday night, the local forecast from The Weather Channel, AccuWeather, and WeatherBug had morning wind chill temperatures ranging from -19 to -25 degrees, and temperatures were forecast to be near the same levels in the afternoon at the time of student dismissal.
Nearly 70% of students in CCSD59 ride a bus, and as such, the time students wait in the morning for their bus can be particularly dangerous in cold weather. While many parents have the option to drive their children to school, we are also aware there are many parents who do not have that option.
Along with the concerns of safe travel to and from school during the dangerous weather, we have also received several reports of power outages throughout the district. We have several schools without power this evening, and this adds to our concern for a safe school day tomorrow.
Please know that we take the closing of school extremely seriously, and we have done so this week with the safety of our students as our number one priority.
