Dear 3rd grade parents,
We have been busy in 3rd grade! In math, students have been analyzing and creating different kinds of graphs. Most students are feeling very comfortable with pictographs and bar graphs. They were assessed on Wednesday. You will get a chance to view their assessment early next week! We began our unit on elapsed time by reviewing clocks/time this week.
In the area of literacy, students have finished up our Writer’s and Reader’s Workshop launch lessons. We are feeling prepared to begin our first units as 3rd graders! In writing, students will begin writing a personal narrative. We have been tracking our noticings as we read different examples of narratives as a class and on our own. In reading, students will be analyzing new texts and their characters. I am modeling many techniques and strategies with a read aloud titled, The Lemonade War.
In science, we are continuing to learn about the human body. Students have LOVED watching the videos about our skeletal system, exploring owl pellets and animal skeletons, and tracing their peers and labeling each others’ bones. Have your child check out the “Science Resources” page on our website if they are interested in more! Next week, we will explore the joints of our body!
A few reminders:
*This Monday, September 26, 3rd graders have their bike safety field trip. I encouraged students to bring their bike helmet to school on Monday (if they have one!).
*Be sure to check red folders daily! (Next week you will receive students’ Math and Science assessments)
*Goal Setting Conferences are quickly approaching – October 5 or October 6. A reminder about your time will be sent home at the end of next week. Or, feel free to visit SignUpGenius.com to double check your time. If you have not signed up yet, please return the yellow paper I sent home yesterday OR sign up online. Thank you!
^^^Students enjoyed sharing facts about themselves for our very first “Fun Fact Friday” this morning! Examples: “I was born early”, “I was born with red hair”, “I was born in Switzerland”, “I like my mother – she gives me everything I want”, “I don’t like my family, I LOVE my family”. Such a great way to start our day!
Thank you so much for all you do with your child! Have a fantastic weekend!
Sincerely,
Ms. Scott
