Dear 3rd grade parents,
These weeks have been long and busy in 3rd grade! Our Halloween party was a great start to last week (can you believe that was LAST week?! Seems like forever ago!). Thank you to Mrs. Procarione, Mrs. Sabovic, Mrs. Gutierrez, and Mrs. Podraza for volunteering and planning to make the party a success! Thank you to all of the other parents who donated to the party fund for the snacks, games, and craft! It sounded like everyone had a wonderful time trick-or-treating and celebrating the fun holiday.
In the area of Writer’s Workshop, students celebrated their personal narratives with a Publishing Party last Friday! 3rd graders brought in a treat of their choice and listened to their peers read their narratives aloud. I was so impressed with their small moment stories! You will be seeing these stories come home in the near future. If you can’t wait, ask your child to read their story to you from their Google Drive at home.
This week we began our unit on informational writing. Students have been immersed in nonfiction texts and are beginning to ask questions and collect noticings of nonfiction books. 3rd graders will use this knowledge to eventually write their own informational book choosing a topic based on our new social studies unit.
We finished up our Human Body science unit this week! I was so impressed with students knowledge and interest of bones, joints, and our latest focus, muscles. Students read texts, watched videos, and even assembled a leg model using wooden sticks, paper clips, rubber bands, and rubber tubes to symbolize the parts of a leg. Muscle quizzes will be sent home Monday!
In the area of math, students continue to explore perimeter. 3rd graders understand that perimeter measures the length of the sides of a polygon. 3rd graders continue to work on using strategies to find the perimeter of a polygon when there is a missing side. Example below:
Students were introduced to area and will continue exploring area and perimeter activities next week.
Our new Social Studies unit has begun. This week students learned about services in our community. We learned that a service is a task or something someone does for you. We have private services, like barber shops, nail salons, restaurants, retail stores, and grocery stores. We also have public services, like the fire department, post office, police department, public schools, etc. Taxes help us pay for these public services! Students will soon learn about goods and services together, supply and demand, and thinking about how a business works through an interactive “Business Day” in 3rd grade. Students (and teachers!) are super excited!

Students have been working diligently on their “Tic Tac” literacy assignments during our Guided Reading time. These assignments were assigned at the beginning of the school year, and explained that they must be done by the end of the 1st trimester. Students who complete all 9 assignments will take part in watching a movie with the rest of the 3rd graders as a celebration!
One of the “Tic Tac” assignments is adding students’ Reading Log minutes up. If students are reading 20 minutes every night and logging their minutes, they will have surpassed the 800 minute goal. Please encourage your child to continue reading at home and logging their minutes!
3rd graders have been rockstars with our kindergarten reading buddies in Mrs. Woetzel’s class. Today they helped the kindergarteners assemble and fill out a cute Thanksgiving booklet with things they are thankful for! I was so proud of their compassionate and helpful attitudes with these young students!
Yesterday, Forest View was lucky to have visitors from Sunrise Lake facilitate team building exercises for the classes. It was a beautiful day to work together as a team and have some fun!

With so much negativity in the world, our classroom is trying to make others feel good these days. This Wednesday, we spread kindness throughout our school by writing anonymous “feel good” notes to teachers, custodial staff, office staff, and more! Our Friday morning routines, “Feel Good Friday”, is when we write anonymous notes to each other in the classroom to pass around joy and kindness. We can’t control everything that happens in our school, community, country, but we can control how we treat others!
Encourage your child to keep spreading the kindness at home!
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend. I apologize for the long newsletter– but there was a lot to catch up on in 3rd grade!
Sincerely,
Ms. Scott
