Happy New Year 3rd grade parents! I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break with family and friends. Students were eager to get back to the routine of school!

We had an incredibly successful Business Day this afternoon! A few weeks ago, 3rd graders were given “business partners” to collaborate with in producing a good or a service that they could sell to other 3rd graders. Students were in charge of producing, advertising, and actually selling with their group. In our class, three teams chose services: The 3 Beauties Hair Salon, a Sports Arcade, and a Bottle Flipping Challenge. We also had three teams selling goods: Gems and Diamonds jewelry made out of beads and brass fasteners, The 4 Jewelry Girls jewelry made out of paper, tape, and beads, and Starlights wands! I am a proud teacher watching these 3rd graders execute their plans as a team and create successful businesses! Way to go!

During our Writer’s Workshop, students are in many different stages of our Informational Writing unit. Most students are compiling their research of a chosen Service (fire department, healthcare, police, librarian, restaurant, etc.) into paragraphs and chapters for a website or a book.

During our Reader’s Workshop, students will be learning about another type of informational text; biographies. Students visited our school library to check out biographies that were of interest to them. They began reading, and were given strategies on how to collect important information as they read. Ask your child about the person they have chosen to study!

In the area of math, students continue to explore multiplication, the many strategies we use to find the product of multiplication problems, and are beginning to look at the different properties of multiplication.

Before our winter break, students said “good-bye and good luck!” to our friend, Malou who moved back to her home in Switzerland. Forest View will miss her very much. However, we also welcomed a new student to our class, Kahla! We are so happy to have another new friend in 3rd grade! Below is a picture of our whole class right before winter break!

I hope everyone has an exceptional weekend. Remind your 3rd grader to get a few good nights of sleep, as we had many tired students this week!

Sincerely,

Ms. Scott
